Congress MP Detained Before Modi's Mumbai Visit
  • Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad detained
  • Protests planned during Modi's visit
  • Police cite security concerns for action

The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mumbai has sparked a political controversy, with Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad alleging her detention by police ahead of planned protests. Gaikwad, the Mumbai Congress chief, claims she and other party workers were prevented from staging a demonstration during Modi's scheduled appearances at the Global Fintech Fest 2024 and the foundation laying ceremony of the Vadhvan Port project.

Gaikwad, a vocal critic of the Modi government, expressed outrage at the preemptive action taken by the police, stating that her intention was to stage a peaceful protest and demand an apology from the Prime Minister for an alleged insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Congress party contends that Modi should take responsibility for the collapse of a Shivaji Maharaj statue unveiled by him at the Rajkot fort in Sindhudurg district earlier this week.

The Mumbai police, however, justify the detention of Gaikwad and other Congress leaders as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential disruption during the Prime Minister's visit. They emphasize that security concerns prompted the increased police presence outside the residences of several Congress leaders and the detention of some party members and supporters. The police argue that these actions were necessary to maintain order and ensure the smooth execution of Modi's itinerary.
