The Indian Racing Festival is set to captivate Chennai with its second round, featuring a thrilling street race around the Island Grounds. The event, scheduled for August 29, 2024, promises high-speed action and a captivating display of automotive prowess. The 3.5-kilometer Chennai Formula Racing Circuit, a temporary track crafted for the event, boasts 19 corners and a unique layout that weaves around the Island Grounds, culminating in a start-finish straight along the beach road.
The track's design is characterized by its combination of long straights and chicanes. This configuration allows drivers to push their cars to their limits on the straights, achieving exhilarating speeds that will enthrall the spectators. The F4 championship utilizes Mygale F4 Gen 2 cars, equipped with powerful Alpine 1.3-liter turbocharged engines, capable of reaching a top speed of 210 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, the IRL class employs Wolf Racing Cars (Wolf Thunder GB08) powered by Aprilia RSV4 1.0 engines, achieving an impressive top speed of 240 kilometers per hour. The F4 cars are open-wheeled and open-cockpit, providing a visceral racing experience, while the IRL cars feature closed wheels.
The fast-paced nature of the circuit, with its long straights, creates a challenging environment for the drivers. Even a slight mistake can have significant consequences, as the street course lacks extensive run-off areas. Drivers must be acutely aware of the barriers and navigate the track with precision, finding the limit of their cars without exceeding it by even a millimeter. The combination of speed and the potential for errors promises a high-stakes competition where every corner and every straightaway will be crucial.
