Chennai's Formula 4 Race Triggers Traffic Diversions
  • Chennai hosts India's first night Formula 4 race.
  • Traffic diversions in effect from August 30 to September 1.
  • Road closures include Sivananda Salai and Kodimaram Road.

Chennai is gearing up to host India's inaugural night street Formula 4 race, an event that is expected to draw significant attention and crowds. However, this excitement comes with a necessary measure – traffic management and diversions, which will be in effect from August 30th to September 1st. The Formula 4 race is scheduled to take place on August 31st and September 1st, utilizing a 3.5-kilometer circuit around Chennai's Island Stadium.

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the event, the Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police have issued a series of advisories outlining road closures and diversions. Key locations in Chennai, including Walaja Road, Annasalai, Kamarajar Road, and EVR Road, will be impacted by these measures. The police have also announced a complete prohibition on heavy and light commercial vehicles from noon to 10 pm on August 30th and 31st at Munram, Muthuswamy Point, and Paris Corner. These restrictions are in place to facilitate the safe passage of race participants and spectators.

One of the most significant closures is the complete shut down of Sivananda Salai and Kodimaram Road. No traffic diversions are available for vehicles traveling from Kamaraj Road towards Santhome during this period. This closure is expected to cause major disruptions for commuters relying on these routes. The traffic police have provided alternative routes for other affected areas. For instance, vehicles traveling from Central Light towards Anna Salai can proceed as usual up to Pallavan Road Junction, where a temporary two-way lane has been set up. Vehicles heading towards the War Memorial on Kamaraj Road will be diverted near Labourer’s Statue and guided through Walaja Road, Annasalai, Periyar Statue, and EVR Road. Finally, vehicles bound for Walaja Point on Anna Road will be redirected to Central Light Point on Pallavan Road.

The Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police has emphasized that vehicles are strictly prohibited from traveling from Muthuswamy Junction to Annasalai and Kodi Maarachala. Commuters wanting to reach their destination from this area must take alternative routes such as Pallavan Road, EVR Road, Central Railway Station, and Periyamedu Gandhi Irwin. These diversions are crucial for maintaining order and safety on the roads during the high-traffic days of the race.

The traffic management plans for the Formula 4 race showcase the meticulous efforts made by the Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police to balance the excitement of the event with the needs of the city's commuters. These measures are intended to minimize disruptions and ensure the safety of all road users. However, it is important for residents and visitors to stay informed about the diversions and road closures to plan their journeys accordingly.
