The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is seeking expert assistance from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in analyzing DNA and forensic evidence related to the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The aim of this collaboration is to conclusively determine if only one person, Sanjay Roy, was involved in the crime, effectively ruling out the possibility of multiple perpetrators.
The CBI's intention is to construct a watertight case, leaving no room for doubt. Seeking the opinion of AIIMS experts is a crucial step in this process, as the agency strives to establish the extent of Roy's involvement and whether any other individuals were complicit in the heinous crime. The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, 2023, after being brutally attacked during her 36-hour shift.
CCTV footage captured Roy entering the seminar hall at 4:03 AM on August 9, leading to his arrest on August 10. Police interrogation and a subsequent lie-detector test have been conducted on Roy. However, despite initially admitting to the crime, Roy has since declared his innocence in a local court. The victim's family has expressed concerns, raising the possibility that multiple individuals were involved in the crime. However, to date, no concrete evidence has emerged to support the claim of a gang rape.
In addition to the DNA and forensic analysis, the CBI is investigating potential financial irregularities at the RG Kar hospital, a separate probe being conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ongoing investigations highlight the gravity of the situation and the multi-faceted nature of the case. The CBI's collaborative efforts with AIIMS and the ED's financial investigation aim to bring all the perpetrators to justice, ensuring a comprehensive and thorough investigation into this tragic incident.
The victim's family continues to seek justice for their daughter, and the case has sparked widespread outrage and protests against gender-based violence. The outcome of the investigation and the eventual trial will be closely watched, with hopes that it will serve as a deterrent against similar crimes and bring closure to the grieving family.
