The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the tragic rape-murder of a woman doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) in Kolkata, West Bengal. The investigation has taken a significant turn with the second round of polygraph tests administered to former RGKMCH principal Sandip Ghosh and five others. The decision to conduct these tests stems from inconsistencies in Mr. Ghosh's answers during previous questioning over the past ten days.
The investigation initially focused on the rape-murder itself, with the arrest of a civic volunteer shortly after the crime occurred on August 9th. The incident sparked widespread protests and outrage, leading to a nationwide call for justice and accountability. The CBI's involvement was crucial in ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation into the heinous crime.
However, the scope of the investigation has expanded to encompass allegations of financial irregularities within the hospital itself. Mr. Ghosh, along with former medical superintendent and vice-principal Sanjay Vashisth, are now under scrutiny for potentially illicit activities within the institution. This aspect of the investigation was sparked by a complaint filed by Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of RGKMCH. Mr. Ali alleged that Mr. Ghosh and his associates awarded tenders for the construction of food stalls, cafes, canteens, and urinals without the necessary authorization from the health department and the college council. The CBI has begun investigating these allegations, with preliminary findings indicating that three traders received these ‘illegal’ tenders.
