The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting a thorough investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a trainee postgraduate doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which occurred on August 9th. As part of this ongoing investigation, the CBI has recently conducted polygraph tests on two private security guards who were employed at the hospital. These tests were administered after the guards were presented before a Kolkata court, which granted permission for the procedure.
The polygraph tests are a crucial aspect of the CBI’s investigation, as they aim to extract further leads about the crime and potentially identify inconsistencies in the statements provided by the individuals being tested. This is the latest development in the case, which has already seen a significant number of individuals subjected to polygraph examinations. The group includes the arrested suspect, Sanjay Roy, former medical college principal Sandip Ghosh, Kolkata Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anup Dutta, four doctors who were on duty the night of the incident, and a Kolkata Police civic volunteer.
While the results of the polygraph tests may not be directly admissible as evidence in court, they are likely to provide the CBI with crucial corroborative evidence that can help strengthen their case. The tests are designed to identify inconsistencies in statements by monitoring physiological responses such as heart rate, breathing patterns, sweating, and blood pressure. The hope is that by analyzing these responses, the CBI can glean valuable insights into the individuals' involvement in the crime.
The investigation into the trainee doctor’s death has taken on immense significance in light of the heinous nature of the crime and the widespread public outrage that followed. The incident occurred in a seminar hall at the hospital, where the doctor had reportedly gone to rest during her night shift. CCTV footage captured Sanjay Roy entering the seminar hall at 4:03 am on the day of the crime, leading to his arrest the following day.
The Calcutta High Court took the unprecedented step of transferring the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13th, with the latter taking over the case on August 14th. This decision highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the case and the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation. The incident has sparked widespread protests across the country, with people demanding justice for the victim and calling for increased safety measures for medical professionals.
