BJP Leader Accuses Mamata Banerjee of Inciting Violence
  • BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar accuses West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of inciting violence.
  • Majumdar calls Banerjee's remarks 'anti-national' and seeks Governor's intervention.
  • Banerjee's comments came after protests against a doctor's murder in Kolkata.

The political landscape of West Bengal has been further inflamed by a recent exchange between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The controversy revolves around statements made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which have been condemned by the BJP as inflammatory and inciting violence. The BJP has accused Banerjee of resorting to 'anti-national' rhetoric and seeking revenge against the party.

The conflict arose in the aftermath of protests against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The BJP has been leading these protests, and Banerjee's statements are seen as a direct response to their actions. In a speech to the TMC's student wing, Banerjee stated, 'The time has come to resist and protest when you are insulted. When faced with ugly attacks, do not take it lying down. How you respond is up to you.' She further added, 'I never sought revenge, but now, do what needs to be done.' This statement was interpreted by the BJP as a clear call for violence against their supporters.

In response to these remarks, BJP West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar penned a letter to Governor CV Ananda Bose, seeking his intervention. Majumdar described Banerjee's statement as 'brazenly inciting the gathering' and expressed concern over the 'blatant endorsement of revenge politics from the state's highest office'. He also highlighted Banerjee's claim that 'If Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn', which he labeled as 'the rhetoric of an anti-national'.

Majumdar urged the Governor to 'initiate appropriate measures to address the situation judiciously' and called for Banerjee's immediate resignation, arguing that she no longer deserves to hold such an important position. This escalating conflict between the TMC and the BJP further underscores the deeply entrenched political rivalry in West Bengal. The Governor's response to Majumdar's letter and the subsequent actions of both parties will determine the course of this political showdown and its potential impact on the state's security and social order.
