The BJP has launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of protecting those responsible for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The party, in a press conference, went so far as to label Banerjee a "dictator" and demanded her resignation to facilitate an impartial investigation into the case. The BJP's ire was further fueled by the violent turn of events during protests demanding justice for the victim and the chief minister's resignation.
The crux of the BJP's allegations rests on its claim that Banerjee is shielding those involved in the rape and murder case. The party demanded that the CBI administer a polygraph test on both Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, whom they accused of initially misclassifying the victim's death as a suicide. The BJP national spokesperson, Gaurav Bhatia, vehemently criticized the handling of the case, stating, "Whatever is happening in West Bengal is worrisome. It's akin to tearing the Constitution to shreds. It's clearly visible that if at all there is a doctor in the country, it's Mamata Banerjee."
The protests, organized by "Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj," began peacefully but descended into violence when a scuffle broke out between protesters and police on Kona Expressway in Santragachhi. The protests, which demanded the resignation of the chief minister and justice for the victim, turned into a warzone as protesters hurled banners and stones at police, breached barricades, and even climbed on Howrah Bridge. This escalation of violence further fueled the BJP's accusations against Banerjee, alleging that her administration has created an atmosphere conducive to such unrest. The incident highlights a growing pattern of escalating political tension in West Bengal, marked by accusations of political interference, police brutality, and a breakdown of law and order.
