BJP Accuses Mamata Banerjee of Lying in Rape Case Letter
  • BJP accuses West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of lying in her letter to PM Modi.
  • Banerjee's letter demanded central legislation against rape, criticizing Union Minister's response.
  • BJP countered by highlighting West Bengal's inaction on fast-track courts and other measures.

The political feud between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal has intensified following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The latest salvo came from the BJP, who accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of dishonesty in her second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the issue. Banerjee had urged Modi to introduce a stringent central legislation against rape and ensure exemplary punishment for perpetrators, expressing disappointment with the generic response from the Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi.

The BJP, however, countered Banerjee's claims. Amit Malviya, a BJP leader, highlighted a specific point in Devi's reply where she stated that the West Bengal government had failed to establish even a single Fast Track Court for addressing rape and POCSO-related cases. Malviya challenged Banerjee to explain why her government had not implemented existing regulations for women's safety and demanded answers instead of writing letters. Tarun Chugh, BJP national general secretary, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the Modi government's commitment to women's safety and highlighting the reforms introduced through the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. He accused Banerjee of misleading the people of Bengal by writing letters and called for honest action from the state administration to ensure justice.

Earlier, Devi had criticized the deteriorating situation for women in West Bengal and blamed the state government's failure to implement central schemes like fast-track courts and emergency helplines. She also pointed out that the fast-track special courts allocated to West Bengal were yet to become operational. Banerjee, however, defended her government's actions, claiming that 10 exclusive POCSO courts had been approved and 88 fast-track special courts and 62 POCSO-designated courts were already functioning in West Bengal on state funding. She also highlighted the existence of helpline numbers 112 and 1098, as well as the extensive use of Dial-100 for emergencies. The exchange of letters and accusations between the BJP and the TMC, coupled with the public outcry over the tragic case, further intensifies the political tension in West Bengal, leaving the issue of women's safety at the center of the debate.
