The recent viral video and photo depicting Kannada film actor Darshan Thoogudeepa engaging in activities like smoking and making video calls within the confines of the high-security Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru have ignited a storm of controversy and raised serious questions about the alleged preferential treatment afforded to certain inmates. The video obtained by The Indian Express reveals Darshan, along with notorious gangster J Nagaraj, also known as Wilson Garden Naga, seated on the prison lawn, nonchalantly puffing on a cigarette while holding a cup. Another video shows Darshan comfortably making a video call, seemingly unfazed by the strict regulations that govern prison life.

Darshan and 11 others were arrested in June in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy from Chitradurga. While the media has not been able to independently verify the veracity of the viral footage, a prison official confirmed the authenticity of the video and photo. This confirmation triggered an immediate response from the authorities, with the Director General of Police (Prisons) ordering an inquiry into the matter to ascertain the circumstances surrounding these activities and whether any regulations were breached. The investigation into Renukaswamy's murder is reportedly nearing completion, with a chargesheet expected to be filed soon.

The family of the murder victim, particularly Kashinath Shivannagoudar, the father of Renukaswamy, expressed deep anguish and disappointment at the video footage, raising concerns about the fairness and transparency of the investigation process. “While we have faith in the state police, it is disheartening to see the accused seemingly enjoying themselves. We believe a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe is necessary,” stated Shivannagoudar, highlighting the growing mistrust and lack of confidence in the handling of the case.

This incident has brought to the forefront the long-standing issue of “VIP treatment” for certain individuals incarcerated in Bengaluru Central Prison. It is not the first time such allegations have surfaced, as similar incidents have been reported in the past, such as the alleged special privileges granted to then All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Sasikala during her incarceration for a disproportionate assets case. These incidents raise concerns about the effectiveness of prison security protocols and the potential for favoritism and undue influence to compromise the integrity of the penal system.

The stark contrast between the luxurious lifestyle seemingly enjoyed by Darshan and the harsh realities faced by ordinary prisoners underscores the deeply ingrained inequalities and biases within the criminal justice system. The public outcry and demand for a thorough investigation into this incident underscore the need for stricter accountability and transparency in prison administration. The authorities must ensure that all inmates, regardless of their social standing or notoriety, are treated equally and subjected to the same rules and regulations. Failure to address these concerns will only further erode public trust in the legal system and perpetuate the perception of a two-tiered justice system.
