Ranbir Kapoor, a prominent figure in Bollywood, recently opened up about his early life experiences, shedding light on the values instilled in him by his late father, Rishi Kapoor. Before embarking on his acting career with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2007 film 'Saawariya,' Ranbir served as an assistant director for Bhansali's 'Black.' His journey to becoming a star began with a period of education and self-discovery, shaped by his father's stern yet influential guidance.
Ranbir's higher education took him to The School of Visual Arts in New York following his college days in Mumbai. However, Rishi Kapoor believed that Ranbir was too young to pursue acting and sent him back to New York. During this period, Ranbir enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute to refine his acting skills. Despite belonging to a privileged background, Rishi Kapoor imposed a strict budget on Ranbir, limiting his spending to two meals a day. Ranbir recounted how his father's strict budget meant relying on McDonald's dollar menu for both lunch and dinner, emphasizing that even with their privileged background, the daily allowance was limited to $2 for each meal.
Ranbir's father never explicitly explained his reasoning, but Ranbir believes that the intent was to teach him the value of money and to experience life as a regular student, rather than living with the privileges of a superstar's son. This frugality continued even after Ranbir returned to Mumbai, where he relied on public transport while assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on 'Black.' Ranbir acknowledged that his father wanted him to experience hardship and understand that his life wasn't a constant indulgence.
Beyond finances, Ranbir also reminisced about his college days in Mumbai, where he developed a smoking habit. This habit persisted until last year when he decided to quit for his health and the well-being of his daughter Raha. HR College, according to Ranbir, was where he first purchased a pack of cigarettes, a symbol of adulthood and rebellion amongst his peers. He fondly remembers the feeling of wearing his own clothes, a departure from the confines of school uniforms.
