Odisha Braces for Heavy Rains, 19 Districts on Alert
  • Odisha faces heavy rain warning
  • 19 districts under downpour alert
  • Fishermen advised to stay ashore

Odisha is bracing for a heavy downpour as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain warning for 19 districts across the state. The warning comes as a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal intensifies into a depression, leading to an increase in rainfall activity. The IMD has advised fishermen to stay ashore due to the potential for squally weather and rough sea conditions.

The depression is expected to move northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, weakening into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. This movement will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging from 70 mm to 200 mm, to several districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Ganjam, and Gajapati. These districts are facing the most severe warning, categorized as a 'yellow warning' by the IMD.

The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in Kandhamal, Cuttack, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Balangir, Nayagarh, Cuttack, and Khurda districts. While the impact of the heavy rainfall is expected to be widespread, authorities are urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The Odisha Revenue Minister, Suresh Pujari, has directed district authorities to remain vigilant and evacuate residents to safer locations if necessary, providing them with cooked meals if required. The Special Relief Commissioner, Satyabrata Sahu, has emphasized the importance of prohibiting vehicle movement along submerged roads to ensure safety.
