Mumbai experienced torrential downpours on Saturday, with several areas receiving over 100mm of rainfall between 8am and 6pm. Sewri Koliwada witnessed the highest rainfall at 114.20mm, followed by Lower Parel at 112.20mm, Wadala at 104.40mm, Govandi at 110mm, and Mankhurd at 104.6mm. The city as a whole received an average of 63.56mm of rain during this period, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 49.68mm and 38.18mm, respectively.
The heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in Kurla, likely exacerbated by ongoing Metro construction work. In the 24 hours between 8:30am on Friday and Saturday, the Colaba weather station recorded 111mm of rainfall, while Santacruz registered 79mm. The city average for this period was 90.56mm, with the eastern suburbs receiving 87.14mm and the western suburbs receiving 92.81mm.
The abundant rainfall resulted in the Tulsi Lake, the smallest of the lakes supplying water to Mumbai, reaching its capacity of 8046 million liters and overflowing at 8:30am. This marked the second consecutive year that the lake overflowed on this date. The Tulsi Lake provides an average of 18 million liters of water per day to the city. The rainfall has significantly boosted the water levels in the lakes supplying Mumbai, reaching 40.96% compared to 39.61% in 2023 and 88.5% in 2022.
Despite the heavy rainfall and subsequent waterlogging, a yellow alert remains in effect for the rest of the week. This indicates a continuation of wet weather, with potential for further rainfall and possible localized flooding. Citizens are advised to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
