Heavy Rains Trigger Alert in Kozhikode, Kerala
  • Kozhikode district on high alert due to heavy rains.
  • Tourists restricted from ecotourism spots due to flash flood risk.
  • Power outages and house damage reported in northern Kerala.

The district of Kozhikode in Kerala is currently facing a severe weather situation, prompting heightened vigilance from the Disaster Management Authority. Incessant rainfall and rising river levels have created a dangerous situation, leading to the implementation of emergency measures to protect the public.

The Indian Meteorological Department issued an alert warning of squally weather, with surface winds reaching speeds of up to 55 kmph. As a precaution, access to ecotourism spots has been restricted, due to the high risk of flash floods. The Iruvazhinji and Chalippuzha rivers have witnessed a rapid increase in water levels, posing a significant threat.

The rise in water levels in the Chalippuzha river resulted in the closure of the Chembukadavu bridge in Kodenchery panchayat for several hours. The situation demanded police intervention, as motorists attempted to cross the flooded bridge, putting their lives at risk. This emphasizes the need for strict adherence to safety precautions during such weather events.

The heavy rains and strong winds have also caused damage to property. In Ambayathode, near Thamarassery, around 10 houses sustained damage during the night of July 28th and the following day. The extent of the damage is still being assessed by village authorities, and further details are expected to be released soon.

The severe weather has also disrupted power supply in the region. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has reported the highest number of power outages in northern Kerala, attributing the disruptions to extensive damage to lamp posts and supply lines. A special team has been deployed to assess the damage and expedite restoration efforts.

Several grama panchayats have issued safety alerts to residents living near overflowing rivers, urging them to take precautions and seek shelter if necessary. Following instructions from the Revenue department, some panchayats have established relief camps to provide support to those affected by the heavy rains. All taluk-level helpline numbers have been activated to provide assistance to residents.

The Revenue department has issued multiple warnings to residents in upland areas prone to landslides, urging them to relocate to safer locations. The grama panchayat authorities have been entrusted with the responsibility of providing temporary accommodations to those who have been displaced. The department reports that many families have already voluntarily relocated from the danger zones, demonstrating a proactive approach to safety.

The Fisheries department has issued a warning to fishers using country boats equipped with in-board engines, advising them to remain ashore due to the risk of high tides and turbulent seas. An alert from the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services indicates the possibility of rough seas with waves ranging from 2.2 to 3.1 meters along the Kerala coast until Tuesday night. The warning highlights the importance of prioritizing safety during periods of inclement weather and following advisories issued by authorities.
