Haryana's Monsoon Deficit Impacts Farmers
  • Haryana faces monsoon deficit, impacting farmers.
  • 16 out of 22 districts experienced deficit rainfall.
  • Paddy farmers are struggling with irrigation issues.

The monsoon season in Haryana has been marked by a significant rainfall deficit, affecting various districts and posing challenges to farmers, particularly those involved in paddy cultivation. According to data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), 16 out of 22 districts in the state have experienced a deficit rainfall, with six districts falling under the 'large deficit category' and 10 in the 'deficit category.' This dry monsoon has not only failed to provide relief from the scorching heat but has also exacerbated humid weather conditions across most of the state.

The lack of adequate rainfall has created difficulties for farmers, who are heavily reliant on monsoon rains for irrigation. Paddy farmers, who have already completed transplantation, are facing the brunt of the situation as canal water supply is insufficient in the absence of adequate rainfall. This issue has been particularly highlighted in the Assandh subdivision of Karnal, where farmers have protested the lack of canal water from a seasonal river. The persistent dry spell has also created concerns for cotton farmers, as they may struggle to fulfill their water requirements post-sowing. The situation may also affect the sowing of bajra and other kharif crops.

Experts attribute the dry monsoon to the unstable nature of the monsoon turf, which has shifted its focus to Central India. However, predictions suggest a possible return of the monsoon to the region in the coming days. The impact of the deficient rainfall extends beyond agriculture, affecting the overall well-being of the population. The persistent heat and humidity pose health risks, and the lack of rainfall contributes to water scarcity in various regions.
