The national capital of Delhi experienced a deluge of heavy rainfall on Wednesday, leading to a citywide struggle with waterlogged roads, traffic congestion, and flooded homes. The downpour, while bringing much-needed relief from the humidity, brought the city to a standstill. Schools and several business establishments were closed, and flights were diverted or delayed. The heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, also affected other areas in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Social media platforms became a platform for sharing dramatic videos showcasing the impact of the rain. Residents shared clips of traffic snarls and waterlogging, highlighting the lack of proper drainage systems in the city. One user, sharing a video from South Delhi, pointed out how a brief downpour caused major traffic blockages on the Ring Road. Another video showed rainwater flooding a premise in Karol Bagh, highlighting the severity of the situation within minutes of rainfall.
The impact of the downpour was not limited to residential areas. The Press Club of India, located just steps away from the Parliament, also experienced flooding, with staff members seen navigating through waterlogged hallways. A frustrated commuter shared videos of the waterlogged city, emphasizing the hours-long traffic congestion and the disruption caused to daily life. Even the newly constructed Parliament building was not spared from the heavy rainfall, with videos surfacing showing a leaking ceiling, leading to accusations of poor infrastructure and construction.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi until 9 PM, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools remained closed in response to the heavy rainfall. The severe weather conditions also impacted air traffic, resulting in numerous flight delays and diversions. The heavy rains served as a stark reminder of the city's inadequate infrastructure, raising concerns about its preparedness in handling such extreme weather events.
