The relentless monsoon season continues to wreak havoc across northern India, with the latest incident being a devastating cloudburst in Shimla's Rampur, Himachal Pradesh. Early this morning, the disaster management authority received reports of a cloudburst near a hydroelectric power project at Samej Khad, leaving twenty people missing. The immediate aftermath of the cloudburst resulted in disrupted road connectivity, hampering rescue efforts. Rescue teams are currently attempting to reach the affected site by hiking, facing challenging terrain and limited access due to the damage caused by the cloudburst.
The disaster has prompted a swift response from the district administration. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap and district police chief Sanjeev Gandhi are leading the efforts, with a dedicated disaster response team deployed to the site. Despite these efforts, the daunting task of finding the missing individuals remains a priority. The extent of the damage caused by the cloudburst is still being assessed, and authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those affected.
Beyond Shimla, the monsoon fury has also caused significant damage in Mandi, another district in Himachal Pradesh. Cloudbursts in Rajban village near Muhal Terang have led to road blockades and landslides, prompting Mandi deputy commissioner Apoorv Devgan to issue an order restricting movement in the affected areas. All educational institutions and vocational training centers in Padhar subdivision have been closed for the safety of students and staff.
The devastating impact of the monsoon extends beyond Himachal Pradesh. Neighbouring Uttarakhand has also faced its share of tragedies. Two people lost their lives, and one was injured after a cloudburst struck Jakhanyali in Tehri Garhwal district. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) responded to the incident, discovering two bodies and rescuing an injured individual from a deep ditch. The SDRF's swift action and dedication to search and rescue operations highlight their crucial role during such disasters.
In Haridwar, Uttarakhand, the relentless rainfall led to the collapse of a dilapidated house, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to nine others. District Magistrate Dhiraj Singh Garbyal reported that the house was in a state of disrepair and succumbed to the heavy rain, leading to the tragic incident. This event underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure during monsoon season, and the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents. As the monsoon continues, authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand remain on high alert, prepared to respond to any further weather-related events and mitigate the impact of the ongoing disaster.
