  • TMC appoints party leaders in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

After meeting with newly elected MPs, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She stated that the party had not received an invitation and even if they did, they would not attend. Banerjee criticized the formation of the government as undemocratic and unconstitutional, expressing her inability to extend well wishes to such a government.

During the meeting, Banerjee announced the appointment of MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay as the leader in the Lok Sabha and Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as the deputy leader. Kalyan Banerjee was named the chief whip in the Lok Sabha.

In the Rajya Sabha, TMC MP Derek O’Brien was elected as the party leader, with Sagarika Ghose as the deputy leader and Nadimul Haque as the Rajya Sabha chief whip.

These appointments aim to strengthen the TMC’s parliamentary presence and streamline leadership roles within both Houses.

Banerjee expressed concerns about the future of the country, stating that the result of the elections should have prompted Modi to step down.

She claimed that her party had won 35 seats in West Bengal in the Lok Sabha elections, but the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) had caused them to lose five to six seats.

Banerjee emphasized that her party’s members would be actively involved in Parliament, opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

She also announced that a four-member team from the TMC would visit Punjab to express solidarity with the farmers’ movement.
