Sikkim CM's Wife Resigns as MLA After Taking Oath

On Thursday, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang's wife, Krishna Kumari Rai, made the decision to step down as an MLA just one day after taking the oath of office, as per an official announcement. This choice stems from a unanimous party decision that prioritizes the party's objectives and well-being.

Rai secured a victory in the recently concluded assembly elections, representing the Namchi-Singhithang seat. However, her resignation has been accepted by Speaker M N Sherpa, as confirmed by Assembly Secretary Lalit Kumar Gurung.

The Chief Minister, who is currently in Arunachal Pradesh for the swearing-in ceremony of Pema Khandu, his counterpart, addressed the situation on Facebook. He stated, 'Regarding the news of my spouse's resignation... I want to inform the respected people of Sikkim that she has vacated her seat in line with the unanimous decision of the party, prioritizing its welfare and objectives.'

Tamang highlighted that Rai's participation in the elections was at the request of the SKM party's parliamentary committee and was driven by her commitment to the party's well-being. He expressed gratitude for her dedication and unwavering support on behalf of the party.

The SKM chief emphasized the party's commitment to offering opportunities to dedicated and genuine members to serve the people of Sikkim. He assured that the Namchi-Singhithang constituency would have a committed and genuine MLA who would serve their interests.

In his statement, the CM added, 'Madam Krishna Rai and I will remain deeply involved in addressing your needs, ensuring that the constituency benefits from the care and attention of three representatives: the new candidate, Madam Krishna Rai, and myself.'
