Pune Experiences Torrential Rainfall, Resulting in Extensive Waterlogging

Pune city has been subjected to torrential rainfall on Saturday evening, leading to severe waterlogging in multiple areas. The rainfall intensity surpassed 65 mm within a short span of two hours, causing significant disruption and inconvenience to residents.

Specific regions within Pune, including Shivajinagar, Baner, and Wadgaon Sheri, recorded exceptionally high rainfall amounts. Shivajinagar received 101.7 mm of rainfall between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM, while Baner and Wadgaon Sheri experienced 56.8 mm and 61.5 mm of rainfall, respectively.

The relentless rainfall has resulted in waterlogging in low-lying regions and parking basements, particularly in areas such as Dhanori, Nagar Road, Kothrud, Sinhgad Road, Bhavani Peth, and Padmavati. Municipal authorities have reported at least 31 incidents of tree fall due to the heavy rainfall.

Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale has indicated that disaster management teams, drainage crews, traffic teams, health workers, and the fire department are actively working on the ground to mitigate the impact of the waterlogging and ensure public safety.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with the administration by reporting waterlogging and inundation through designated helpline numbers. Meanwhile, videos capturing the severity of the waterlogging in Pune have gone viral on social media, showcasing the challenges faced by commuters attempting to navigate the waterlogged streets.

The heavy rainfall in Pune is indicative of the active southwest monsoon, which has also brought heavy rainfall to other parts of south India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange alert' for five districts in Kerala, predicting very heavy rains in those areas.

The IMD has placed the southern district of Pathanamthitta and the northern districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod under the orange alert for Saturday, indicating the likelihood of significant rainfall and potential flooding.

The ongoing rainfall highlights the need for effective disaster preparedness and response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events and ensure the safety of citizens.
