Power Cuts Hit Delhi After UP Substation Glitch
  • Massive power cuts in Delhi due to glitch at UP substation.
  • Power cuts lasted for 1.5 to 2 hours on Tuesday afternoon.
  • Several East, Southeast and Central Delhi areas affected.

Delhi faced massive power cuts for nearly 1.5 to 2 hours on Tuesday afternoon due to a glitch at a substation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in Uttar Pradesh.

Several parts of East, Southeast and Central Delhi, including water treatment plants at Sonia Vihar and others faced power cuts.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi Power Minister Atishi said, “There is a power outage in many parts of Delhi from 2.11 pm. This is due to a fire at the substation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in Mandola, UP. Delhi receives 1200 MW of power from the Mandola sub-station, and therefore many parts of Delhi have been affected”.

She said the power restoration process has begun and electricity is now gradually returning to different areas.

However, UP Government officials denied there was any fire. “It was not a fire. There was a spark in one of the isolators of our system which caused the problem in the electricity supply. It happened around 2.10 pm and it was fixed by 3 pm. The supply has been restored and around 1400 MW of electricity is being supplied to Delhi from our Mandola substation in Ghaziabad,” said A K Mishra, Executive Director, Northern Region-1, Power Grid.

Delhi’s temperature was around 42 degree Celsius on Tuesday afternoon.
