Mohan Charan Majhi Named BJP's First Odisha Chief Minister
  • Mohan Charan Majhi elected BJP's first Odisha CM.
  • K. V. Singh Deo and Pravati Parida to be Deputy CMs.
  • Swearing-in ceremony on June 12 at Janata Maidan.

After a week of intense speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on June 11 officially named Mohan Charan Majhi as its first Chief Ministerial pick for Odisha. Majhi, a four-time MLA and prominent tribal face, was unanimously elected as the next CM in a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs at the party office in Bhubaneswar.

Majhi, who was the party's chief whip in the 16th Odisha Legislative Assembly, will be supported by two Deputy Chief Ministers: K. V. Singh Deo, a six-time MLA from Patnagarh Assembly constituency, and Pravati Parida, a first-time MLA from Nimapara Assembly segment. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Janata Maidan at 5 p.m. on June 12, with Prime Minister Modi expected to attend.

The election of Majhi as CM marks a significant moment for the BJP in Odisha, as it is the first time the party will lead the state government. The BJP's victory in the recent assembly elections was a major upset, as the party had never held power in the state before. The party's success is largely attributed to its focus on tribal voters, who make up a significant portion of the state's population.

Majhi's election as CM is seen as a sign of the BJP's commitment to inclusive governance. As a tribal leader, Majhi is expected to focus on the development of tribal communities in Odisha. He is also expected to work closely with the central government to bring more development projects to the state.

The BJP's victory in Odisha is a major boost for the party, which is now in power in 18 of India's 28 states. The party's success in Odisha is also seen as a sign of its growing popularity among rural voters, who are increasingly turning to the BJP as a viable alternative to the Congress party.
