Maldives President's Surprise Invitation to PM Modi's Oath Ceremony
  • India's Neighbourhood First policy influenced guest list for PM Modi's oath event.
  • Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's inclusion surprising due to strained relations.
  • Logistical considerations and focus on neighborhood relations also factored in invitations.

In line with India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended invitations to the leaders of several neighboring countries for his swearing-in ceremony on June 9. This list includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Sri Lanka.

Notably, the inclusion of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has raised eyebrows due to the strained relations between Male and New Delhi since his election on an 'India Out' campaign. However, sources suggest that India's decision to invite Muizzu signals its willingness to continue cooperation with the Maldives in key areas.

Aside from diplomatic considerations, logistical factors and the desire to emphasize India's commitment to its neighbors also influenced the guest list. Many of the invited leaders have close ties with India and would be able to attend the event on short notice.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, one of India's closest partners, has already confirmed her attendance, highlighting the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Similarly, President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka has been described by Modi as an important partner in the 'Neighbourhood First' policy, underscoring India's commitment to supporting the island nation.

The presence of these regional leaders at Modi's inauguration will serve as a symbolic gesture of India's focus on fostering closer ties and enhancing cooperation with its neighbors.

In previous years, Modi invited leaders from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) to his inauguration in 2014 and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) in 2019, further emphasizing India's commitment to regional cooperation.
