Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday declared the Lok Sabha election results of 2024 as a clear mandate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, terming them as his “moral and political defeat.” Kharge addressed a press conference alongside party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, stating, “This election result is 'janta ka result' (result of the people). They have clearly given this mandate against Modi ji. This is his moral and political defeat.”
Kharge's statement came in response to a question regarding the formation of a government by the INDIA bloc. Rahul Gandhi responded, “We will hold a meeting with our alliance partners tomorrow. These questions will be raised and answered there. We won't make any statements without consulting our alliance partners.”
Later, Kharge took to social media, writing in Hindi, “We humbly accept the mandate of the 18th Lok Sabha elections. This is the victory of the people. This is the victory of democracy. This time, the people did not give an absolute majority to any single party. Notably, the ruling party, BJP, had sought votes in the name of one person - one face. Now, it is evident that this mandate is against Modiji. This is his political and moral defeat.”
Kharge highlighted the Congress Party's positive campaign, centered around issues such as inflation, unemployment, the struggles of farmers and laborers, and the misuse of constitutional institutions. He emphasized that a significant number of people supported these issues, recognizing the false promises made by the Prime Minister.
Kharge credited Rahul Gandhi's tours, the Bharat Jodo Yatra, and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, for forming the foundation of the Congress campaign. These tours involved meeting lakhs of people, listening to their concerns, and finding solutions to their problems, resulting in the development of the Congress's 5 Nyay and 25 guarantees, which were communicated to voters through a guarantee card.
Kharge also criticized the BJP leadership's arrogance and their attempts to control constitutional institutions through illegal means, using them against the opposition. He alleged that those who resisted were suppressed or imprisoned, while some parties were broken up.
