Darshan Thoogudeepa, a prominent Kannada actor, along with nine accomplices, was taken into custody by Bengaluru city police on Tuesday morning in connection with the murder of Renuka Swamy, a 33-year-old youth from Chitradurga.
The incident stemmed from purportedly offensive remarks Swamy had posted on social media about a film actress. Swamy, employed as an assistant in a medical shop in Chitradurga, was recently married.
According to the city police commissioner, B Dayananda, Swamy was abducted from Chitradurga and subsequently killed in Kamakshipalya, a locality in western Bengaluru. His body, bearing physical injuries, was discovered in a drain.
An autopsy and forensic examination confirmed Swamy's murder. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be disclosed.
The arrest of a high-profile actor in connection with a murder case has sent shockwaves through the Kannada film industry and the general public, raising questions about the potential motives and circumstances surrounding the incident.
