Jairam Ramesh debunks Modi's comparison to Nehru on majority count
  • Modi 2/3rd majority claim false, only 240 seat majority
  • Nehru had 2/3rd majority in three elections
  • Vajpayee and Indira sworn thrice, not only since Nehru

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi's supporters' comparison of Modi to India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on the basis of majority in elections. Ramesh pointed out that while Modi won a majority of 240 seats in the recent elections, Nehru won with a two-thirds majority in all three of his elections.

Ramesh termed Modi's supporters as "drumbeaters" who were trying to justify Modi's electoral performance unnecessarily. He said that Modi's majority of 240 seats was not a mandate and that he fell short of a simple majority by 32 seats.

Ramesh contrasted Modi's performance with that of Nehru, who won 364 seats in 1952, 371 seats in 1957, and 361 seats in 1962, each time with a two-thirds majority. Ramesh also noted that Modi was not the only prime minister to be sworn in three times, as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Indira Gandhi had also been sworn in three times.

Ramesh's comments come amid ongoing political discussions about the outcome of the recent elections and the implications for Modi's leadership. The results of the elections have been interpreted in various ways, with some commentators arguing that they represent a setback for Modi and his party, while others have suggested that they indicate continued support for Modi.

Ramesh's analysis of the election results and his comparison of Modi to Nehru provide a valuable perspective on the current political landscape in India. His comments highlight the importance of examining election results in context and avoiding simplistic comparisons that may not fully capture the complexities of the political situation.
