India Election 2024: Modi's Early Lead Narrower in Delhi

India Election 2024: Modi's Early Lead Narrower in Delhi
  • Modi's NDA coalition leads in all seven Delhi seats.
  • Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was jailed on corruption charges.
  • Kejriwal's AAP may lose Delhi seats despite his campaign rallies.

India's national election in 2024 is underway, and early results indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is leading in all seven parliamentary seats in the capital city of Delhi. However, the margin of victory is narrower than predicted, and the outcome remains uncertain.

The BJP's strong performance in Delhi is not surprising, as the party has traditionally dominated the city's politics. In the 2019 election, the BJP won all seven Delhi seats, and it was widely expected to do well again this time around.

However, the arrest and imprisonment of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal just weeks before the election threw a spanner in the works. Kejriwal is a popular figure in Delhi, and his arrest on corruption charges galvanized his supporters and led to a surge in support for his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Kejriwal was released on bail by the Supreme Court last month to allow him to campaign for his party. He has since returned to prison, but his supporters remain hopeful that he will be able to lead the AAP to victory in Delhi.

The final results of the Delhi election are expected to be announced later today. If the AAP is able to pull off an upset and win some or all of the Delhi seats, it will be a major blow to the BJP and could have a significant impact on the overall outcome of the national election.
