The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'very heavy rainfall' warning for several parts of the country, including Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The warning comes as the Southwest monsoon is advancing, and the IMD predicts that very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka for the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual reduction.

According to senior IMD scientist Dr. Soma Sen Roy, the heavy rainfall is associated with the monsoon onset and is expected to continue over southern and central Maharashtra, Marathwada, south Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and coastal Karnataka.

Roy also added that parts of north interior Karnataka are likely to witness very heavy rainfall.

Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday evening, but there were no reports of major waterlogging in the city.

The IMD has also predicted 'fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall' over several northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, during the next seven days.

Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh from June 10 to 14, and isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from June 11 to 14.

The IMD has also issued a warning for isolated hailstorms and squally winds over south Madhya Pradesh on June 11.

The heavy rainfall warning from the IMD comes as several parts of the country are already experiencing heavy monsoon rains, leading to flooding and landslides in some areas.
