The automotive landscape is rapidly evolving, with electric vehicles (EVs) taking center stage. In this competitive environment, Hyundai and Tata Motors, two leading automakers, have introduced their respective compact EVs, the Hyundai Inster and the Tata Punch EV.
The Hyundai Inster, globally unveiled as Hyundai's smallest EV, is a strong contender in the compact EV segment. Its arrival in India promises to shake things up, particularly against the already established Tata Punch EV, which was launched earlier this year.
A key aspect of comparison lies in their dimensions. The Tata Punch EV, while shorter in wheelbase, boasts larger overall dimensions than the Hyundai Inster. This translates to a slightly more spacious rear cabin in the Punch EV, suitable for three passengers, whereas the Inster is designed for four occupants.
Despite the Inster's smaller size, it packs a punch in terms of battery capacity. It offers two battery pack options: a 42 kWh and a 49 kWh, both larger than those available in the Tata Punch EV (25 kWh and 35 kWh). This results in a longer claimed range for the Inster, even though the actual range might vary depending on testing parameters.
However, when it comes to power, the Tata Punch EV has the upper hand. The long-range version of the Punch EV, equipped with a 35 kWh battery, delivers more power than the long-range Inster. On the other hand, for smaller battery pack versions, the Inster emerges as the more powerful option.
Both EVs come with fast charging capabilities, but the Hyundai Inster takes the lead with its 120 kW DC charger, which can recharge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. The Tata Punch EV supports 50 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10-80% charge in 56 minutes.
In terms of features, both the Inster and the Punch EV offer an impressive array of amenities. They include LED lighting, comfortable interiors, infotainment systems with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and advanced safety features like multiple airbags and a 360-degree camera.
However, the Inster adds a unique advantage with its vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing users to power small appliances from the car's battery. The Punch EV, on the other hand, boasts a unique feature called Arcade.ev, which enables streaming videos on the infotainment screen.
The Inster's advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) suite is a significant feature, although its availability in the Indian market remains uncertain. This suite includes features like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking.
While the Inster is expected to be priced higher than the Punch EV due to its larger battery packs, the precise price difference is yet to be revealed. Both EVs are well-equipped and offer compelling features, making the choice between the two a difficult one.
Ultimately, the best choice will depend on individual needs and preferences. If longer range and V2L capability are priorities, the Hyundai Inster might be the better option. However, if power and a more spacious rear cabin are key considerations, the Tata Punch EV might be the winner. As more information about the Inster becomes available, the decision will become clearer.
