Fugitive Businessmen Escaped Due to Delayed Arrests: Mumbai Court
  • Mumbai court: Mallya, Modi, Choksi escaped due to delayed arrests.
  • ED opposed bail relaxation for fugitive businessmen repeat.
  • Court emphasizes agencies' failure in prompt action led to businessmen's flight.

A Mumbai court has highlighted the failure of investigating agencies in arresting fugitive businessmen Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Mehul Choksi in a timely manner, which allowed them to flee the country.

Judge MG Deshpande made this observation while hearing a request from Vyomesh Shah, accused in a money laundering case, to relax his bail conditions for international travel.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed the request, citing concerns about a repeat of the fugitive businessmen's cases.

The judge noted that these businessmen were able to escape due to the agencies' failure to act promptly.

He emphasized that the court could not rectify the ED's initial failures and that it was the ED's responsibility to prevent such individuals from fleeing abroad and potentially tampering with evidence.

The court agreed to relax Shah's bail conditions but stressed that he must inform the ED of his travel plans before each trip.

This case highlights the importance of timely action by investigating agencies in preventing individuals accused of financial crimes from fleeing the country and evading justice.

It also raises questions about the ED's effectiveness in pursuing such cases and its ability to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The court's observation serves as a reminder that the justice system must be vigilant in ensuring that those accused of serious crimes are held accountable and that loopholes that allow them to escape must be addressed.
