Engineer Rashid Defeats Omar Abdullah in Baramulla
  • Omar Abdullah defeated by Engineer Rashid in Baramulla.
  • Engineer Rashid, jailed for terror funding, wins as independent.
  • Rashid's victory unlikely to secure his release or provide effective representation.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has conceded defeat to independent candidate Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, in the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections.

Rashid, who is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail on terror-funding charges, emerged victorious despite being imprisoned.

Rashid's victory has raised questions about his potential release from prison and concerns that the people of North Kashmir may not receive adequate representation.

Rashid, a former two-time MLA and head of the Awami Ittehad Party, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

His sons expressed confidence that his massive rallies would translate into votes and lead to his release.

Rashid's win marks a significant upset, as he defeated Abdullah, a prominent figure in Jammu and Kashmir politics.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also conceded defeat in the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat.

Mufti's defeat underscores the changing political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, with new players emerging and traditional power structures being challenged.

The victories of Rashid and other independent candidates highlight the growing dissatisfaction among voters with established political parties.

It remains to be seen how Rashid's imprisonment will impact his ability to fulfill his electoral mandate and represent the people of Baramulla effectively.
