  • Congress slams Centre over tax devolution release
  • Ramesh calls it 'third-rate PR', entitlement by states
  • Centre released Rs. 1,39,750 cr to states for June

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh has criticized the Centre's release of tax devolution to states for June, calling it a 'third-rate PR' move.

Ramesh asserted that tax devolutions are 'constitutional entitlements' determined by the finance commission and accused the Centre of trying to portray this as a special favor.

The Centre authorized the release of ₹1,39,750 crore to states for June, including an additional installment, bringing the total amount devolved till June 10, 2024, to ₹2,79,500 crore.

The interim budget 2024-25 includes a provision of ₹12,19,783 crore for devolution of taxes to states.

The release of tax devolution comes after senior BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman retained the finance ministry portfolio in the new government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The move has drawn criticism from the Congress, with Ramesh accusing the government of misleading the public and downplaying the constitutional obligation to devolve taxes to states.
