BJP Leads in 235 Lok Sabha Seats, Eyes Third Term for Modi
  • BJP leading in 235 seats, lower than poll predictions.
  • If BJP wins, Modi would be first PM since Nehru to serve three terms.
  • BJP expanding footprint in South, leading in Karnataka and Kerala.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is on the cusp of securing a rare third term at the helm of the Indian government, as results from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections trickle in.

As of the latest updates, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is leading in 235 seats across the country, a figure lower than the landslide victory predicted by various exit polls conducted on June 1st.

If the BJP and Modi are able to retain power, it will mark a significant milestone in Indian politics, as no Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru has been re-elected for a third consecutive term.

The BJP's strong performance in the Hindi heartland states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana, has been a key factor in its current lead.

In Uttar Pradesh, which sends the highest number of parliamentarians to the Lok Sabha, the BJP is leading in 36 seats, underscoring the adage that 'the road to Delhi passes through UP.'

However, the BJP's hopes of expanding its footprint in southern India have met with mixed results, with the party leading in a significant number of seats in Karnataka but struggling to make inroads in other states such as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

In Kerala, where the BJP has traditionally had a weak presence, the party has surprisingly emerged as a frontrunner in two seats, indicating a potential shift in the political landscape of the state.

The final outcome of the Lok Sabha elections remains uncertain, but the BJP's strong showing thus far suggests that Modi and his party are well-positioned to retain power and continue shaping the future of India.
