  • Ramesh Gogoi accused of torture and abetment of suicide.
  • Investigation ongoing, child marriage charges possible.

In a tragic turn of events, the Assam Police have apprehended a man named Ramesh Gogoi from the Dhemaji district on charges of dowry death.

The arrest comes after his 19-year-old wife, Tolari Koch Gogoi, allegedly died by suicide. According to the police, they have registered a case under section 304-B (dowry death) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Preliminary investigations reveal that Ramesh had been accused of practicing child marriage, as he had eloped with Tolari when she was only 15 years old. The family of the deceased had previously lodged a complaint against Ramesh, but the matter was not pursued further.

According to Tolari's mother, Ramesh subjected her to both physical and mental torture, often demanding money. The constant abuse and fear drove Tolari to take her own life.

The police recovered Tolari's body from Ramesh's house on Friday, but he fled from the scene. However, he was apprehended by the police on Saturday afternoon and will be presented before the court on Sunday.

The incident has cast a dark shadow over the community, highlighting the grave issue of dowry-related violence and the exploitation of young girls in the name of marriage. The investigation is ongoing, and if required, the police will add charges related to child marriage to the case.

It is crucial to raise awareness about the evils of dowry and child marriage and to take strict action against perpetrators. Such practices not only violate the rights of women and girls but also perpetuate a cycle of violence and trauma.
