The United States men's cricket team pulled off a shock five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a Twenty20 International (T20I) match in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, giving the Americans a timely boost ahead of next month's T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh, ranked ninth in the world T20 rankings, were restricted to 153-6 batting first, with Towhid Hridoy top-scoring with 58. The USA, ranked 19th in the world, chased down the target with three balls to spare, thanks to a brilliant 61-run partnership between Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh.
Anderson, a former New Zealand international, made 34 off 25 balls, while Singh, a former India U19 World Cup winner, hit a rapid-fire 33 off 13 balls. The victory is a major confidence boost for the USA, who will host group stage games in the T20 World Cup, which is being co-hosted with the West Indies.
The second game of the three-match series between the USA and Bangladesh will be played in Houston on Thursday.
The USA's victory is a reminder that the gap between the top teams and the rest of the world is narrowing. The Americans have a number of talented players, including Anderson, Singh, and captain Saurabh Netravalkar.
If they can continue to play with the same passion and determination, they could make a deep run in the T20 World Cup.
