Student Lynched at Patna University After Exams

A final year student was lynched to death on the campus of Patna University's Law College on Monday, May 27, 2024, by a group of over 10 unidentified people armed with hockey sticks, iron rods, bricks, and sticks.

The victim, identified as Harsh Raj, was an undergraduate student of Functional English Vocational Course studying at B N College. According to the police, Raj was attacked near the auditorium of the Law College campus shortly after he exited the building following an exam.

Raj sustained severe head injuries in the attack and was rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), where he was pronounced dead. A resident of Vaishali district, Raj was staying in a rented house in the Boring Canal Road locality.

Bahu Kumar, a friend of Raj who was present during the attack, stated that the group of attackers numbered more than 10 and that most of them had covered their faces to conceal their identities.

Kumar said that Raj had been politically active and was planning to contest in the upcoming Patna University Student's Union (PUSU) election. He also ran an organization called Lok Nayak Yuva Parishad and had a strong following among students.

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against more than a dozen individuals based on a complaint filed by Raj's father, Ajit Kumar, a journalist for a local newspaper.

Kumar stated that he had advised his son against running in the PUSU election, but Raj was determined to do so. He was actively campaigning in Samastipur for Lok Sabha candidate Shambhavi Kunal Choudhary.

Choudhary expressed shock and grief over Raj's murder and called for a thorough investigation and the arrest of the perpetrators.

Patna University Vice-Chancellor Professor K.C. Sinha announced the cancellation of all ongoing examinations until further notice in light of the incident.

The police are investigating the case and reviewing CCTV footage from the Law College campus to identify the attackers. No arrests have been made as of yet.
