The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs are drawing closer, and a crucial match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in Hyderabad on Thursday could significantly impact the race for the remaining playoff spots.
With Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) already securing their places in the playoffs, the battle for the remaining two positions has intensified. Toss was delayed due to rain in Hyderabad, leading to speculation on potential playoff scenarios in case of a washout.
Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), with 14 and 12 points respectively, have faint hopes of qualifying, but their poor Net Run Rates (-0.377 for DC and -0.787 for LSG) hinder their chances, even though LSG has a game in hand.
The primary contenders for the playoff spots are Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and SRH. SRH, with two matches remaining, can secure a berth in the knockout stages with just one win.
However, RCB and CSK face an anxious wait due to the rain in Hyderabad, with chances of a washout hovering around 50% throughout the evening. If the SRH vs GT match is washed out, both teams will earn one point, propelling SRH to 15 points and confirming their playoff berth.
SRH will climb to the third spot with a washout, as RR will retain their second position in the points table. This outcome would escalate the tension in the game between RCB and CSK, with the clash turning into a virtual knockout for the final spot in the playoffs.
RCB must secure a win to reach 14 points and maintain a superior Net Run Rate (+0.387) over CSK.
On the other hand, CSK, while aiming for victory, must also focus on minimizing the margin of defeat to safeguard their Net Run Rate advantage (+0.528). Even in the scenario of a loss, CSK could still clinch the fourth playoff spot if their Net Run Rate remains above RCB's.
While the blockbuster clash between RCB and CSK will have added significance due to its impact on the playoff race, Mumbai Indians, already eliminated from the playoffs, will meet the LSG on Friday.
SRH will have another shot at improving their standing in the points table when they meet the Punjab Kings (PBKS), while the current top two – KKR and RR – will clash in the final group game of the season.
