In a horrific incident, a five-year-old girl in Chennai became the victim of a vicious attack by two Rottweiler dogs at a public park. The incident, which occurred last night, has reignited the debate over the safety of keeping aggressive dog breeds as pets.
According to police reports, the dogs were let loose by their owner, who allegedly failed to intervene as they attacked the young girl. It was only when the girl's parents rushed to her aid that the dogs were pulled away. The girl, identified as Sudaksha, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Police have arrested the dog's owner and have also charged two others who were responsible for their care with negligence. A CCTV footage from the park captured the horrifying moment of the attack.
The incident has shocked the local community and has brought into question the safety of certain dog breeds in residential areas. In March, the Indian government issued a directive asking states to ban the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of ferocious dogs, including Rottweilers. The directive also requires owners of existing pets from these breeds to sterilize them immediately.
Animal rights organizations and citizen forums have been vocal in their support for a ban on certain dog breeds, arguing that their aggressive nature poses a risk to public safety. The Animal Husbandry Department has received numerous representations from these groups, urging them to take action to prevent future attacks.
