Rahul Gandhi, the Congress candidate from Rae Bareli in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, addressed a rally in the Uttar Pradesh constituency on Monday, May 13. During his speech, Gandhi responded to the crowd's teasing about his marital status by saying, 'Ab jaldi hi karni padegi' (now, I will have to get married soon).
Gandhi's sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was also present at the rally. The Congress party had previously announced that Gandhi would be contesting from Rae Bareli, while his loyalist KL Sharma would contest from Amethi. Priyanka Gandhi and her husband, Robert Vadra, were not included in the electoral contest.
In his speech, Gandhi referred to Rae Bareli as the 'karma-bhoomi' of his mother, Sonia Gandhi, and grandmother, Indira Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi won Amethi in 1999 and passed the baton on to Rahul in 2004, while Indira Gandhi won Raebareli thrice and her husband, Feroze Gandhi, won twice.
Gandhi alleged that for the first time in Indian history, 'BJP-RSS people want to end our Constitution.' He also promised to waive off loans of poor farmers if the Congress-led alliance came to power at the Centre.
Rahul Gandhi is a sitting MP in Kerala's Wayanad, where he is seeking a fresh term alongside Rae Bareli. He previously represented Amethi from 2004 until 2019. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi won Rae Bareli, defeating her closest rival, Dinesh Pratap Singh, by a margin of over 1.67 lakh votes.
