The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant for one match and fined him ₹30 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate in the team's match against Rajasthan Royals on May 7, 2024.
This was Pant's third offense of the season, and as per the IPL playing conditions, the third over-rate offense results in a one-match suspension and a fine of ₹30 lakh for the captain.
The rest of the DC players part of that match against RR, including the Impact Player, were fined ₹12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever is lesser.
DC filed an appeal against the ruling of the match referee, but the appeal was dismissed by the BCCI Ombudsman.
Pant's suspension is a major blow to DC, which needs to win its remaining two games to make the playoffs.
In Pant's absence, Australia's David Warner is likely to captain DC in their next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday.
Pant has been in good form this season, scoring 413 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 156.
He is DC's best batter and also their best keeper, so his absence will be a big loss for the team.
DC's net run rate is not the best, so a loss in any of their remaining two matches could mean curtains for their playoff hopes this year.
