With the onset of summer and the scorching heatwave conditions gripping many regions of India, the arrival of the monsoon rains is eagerly anticipated. The southwest monsoon, which brings much-needed relief from the intense heat, is expected to hit the southern state of Kerala on May 31, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The national capital, Delhi, is currently experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring to 48.3 degrees Celsius in some areas. The IMD has not yet released an official statement regarding the monsoon's arrival in Delhi, but reports suggest that it is likely to hit the city around June 27.
In Mumbai, the monsoon rains are expected to commence on June 10, according to an IMD official quoted by the Indian Express. The monsoon has already entered the Andaman Islands and is expected to reach Mumbai between June 10 and 11. Last year, the monsoon's arrival in Mumbai was delayed by two weeks due to Cyclone Biparjoy.
The IMD has predicted that the monsoon will arrive in Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka, around June 13 or 14. Rainfall in the state is expected to begin in the first week of June. The monsoon has already advanced over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is expected to reach the Kerala coast by June 1-2, before making its way to the Karnataka coast by June 6 or 7.
West Bengal is currently dealing with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which caused significant damage to the state, including Kolkata. The Times of India reported that the monsoon is likely to arrive in West Bengal between June 10 and 29. The head of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata stated that the monsoon's arrival in the state is typically 10 days after its onset in Kerala.
