Heavy Rain in Kerala: Tourist Spots Closed, Travel Restrictions in Place

The onset of monsoons has brought heavy rainfall to Kerala, leading to waterlogging, landslides, and traffic congestion in several areas. In response to these conditions, the authorities have issued an orange alert in seven districts, including Ernakulam and Wayanad.

As a precautionary measure, many tourist spots in the state have been closed to ensure the safety of visitors. These closures include popular destinations such as Ponmudi hill station in Thiruvananthapuram, where a travel ban has been in place since May 18th.

Other affected areas include the hilly regions of Idukki district, where night travel has been prohibited. Restrictions have also been imposed around waterfalls and water bodies, and off-road safaris have been strictly forbidden. Tourists are advised to avoid visiting beaches due to the risk of strong waves.

In Thrissur district, all tourist centers have been closed, including the famous Athirappilly and Vazhachal waterfalls. Other notable spots that will remain closed are Vilangan Hills, Poomala Dam, Kalasamala, Cheppara, Vazhani Dam, Peechi Dam, Enamavu Nehru Park, Snehatheeram Beach, Chavakkad Beach, and Thumboormozhi River Garden.

In Gavi, only those who have booked the Kerala Forest Department Corporations's Vandiperiyar - Vallakadavu daily tour will be permitted to enter. Other tourists will not be allowed to visit the area due to the inclement weather.

The heavy rains have also caused a portion of the Papanasam Cliff near the Varkala helipad to collapse. While no restrictions have been imposed for tourists at this time, the authorities are implementing safety measures to prevent visitors from venturing into the affected area.

The situation in Kerala remains fluid, and updates will be provided as they become available.
