Kempegowda Airport to Charge Entry Fee for Vehicles
  • Airport to impose entry fee for private and commercial vehicles.
  • Private vehicles to pay Rs 150 for overstaying 7 minutes.
  • Cabs and buses to pay Rs 150 and Rs 600, respectively.

Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru is set to impose entry fees for both private and commercial vehicles, effective May 20th, 2023. The decision was made by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) with the aim of streamlining traffic flow and enhancing security measures.

Commercial vehicles, including cabs, will be required to pay an entry fee of Rs 150 for up to 7 minutes. Any stay beyond 7 minutes will incur an additional fee of Rs 300. Private vehicles, on the other hand, will be exempt from the fee for the first 7 minutes, but will be charged Rs 150 for overstaying up to 14 minutes.

The new charges will apply to vehicles accessing the arrival pick-up lanes at Terminal 1 and 2. Buses will be charged an entry fee of Rs 600, while tempo travelers will be required to pay Rs 300. Buses and tempo travelers will be permitted to enter through Lane 3 at Terminal 1.

According to a BIAL source, the implementation of the entry fees is intended to address issues such as haphazard parking, touting, illegal pick-ups, and unattended vehicles in the arrival zones of Terminal 1 and 2. The additional revenue generated is expected to be utilized for the improvement of airport infrastructure and services.

It remains to be seen whether cab aggregators will pass on the additional fee to their customers. The introduction of the entry fees has sparked mixed reactions, with some commuters expressing concerns about the increased costs, while others acknowledge the need for improved traffic management and security at the airport.

The decision to impose entry fees at Kempegowda International Airport is part of a larger trend of airports worldwide seeking to optimize their operations and enhance the overall passenger experience. By implementing such measures, airports aim to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and provide a safer and more efficient environment for travelers.
