Kejriwal's Interim Bail Extension Denied by Supreme Court

Kejriwal's Interim Bail Extension Denied by Supreme Court
  • Supreme Court denies urgent hearing of Delhi CM Kejriwal's interim bail extension plea.
  • Kejriwal must surrender at Tihar Jail by June 2nd.
  • Court refused Kejriwal's request as he can apply for regular bail in the trial court.

The Supreme Court has declined to grant an urgent hearing to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's request for a 7-day extension of his interim bail.

Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor scam, has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10th, 2023.

As per the order passed by the Supreme Court, Kejriwal was required to surrender at Tihar Jail by June 2nd, 2023.

In his plea, Kejriwal had sought an extension of his interim bail, citing the ongoing trial court proceedings in the case.

However, the Supreme Court registry has refused to accept the application, stating that since the Chief Minister has already been granted liberty to approach the trial court for regular bail, the plea for an extension of interim bail is not maintainable.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, had on May 17th, 2023, reserved its verdict on Kejriwal's challenge to the validity of his arrest by the ED.

Kejriwal's plea for extension of interim bail was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Wednesday, but the bench declined to grant an urgent hearing, stating that the matter should be taken up in due course.

Following the Supreme Court's refusal to grant an urgent hearing, Kejriwal will have to surrender at Tihar Jail on June 2nd, 2023, as per the earlier order of the court.

The trial court is expected to hear Kejriwal's plea for regular bail in the coming days, and a decision on his bail application is likely to be taken by the trial court in due course.
