Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Jharkhand High Court's rejection of his bail plea.
Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in January in connection with a money laundering case related to alleged illegal mining activities.
The Jharkhand High Court had dismissed Soren's bail plea on May 3, ruling that the charges against him were serious and that he could influence witnesses if released on bail.
In his appeal to the Supreme Court, Soren has argued that his arrest was politically motivated and that the charges against him are baseless.
He has also claimed that he was not given a fair trial by the Jharkhand High Court and that the court erred in rejecting his bail plea.
The Supreme Court is yet to hear Soren's appeal and has asked the Jharkhand government to file its response.
The outcome of Soren's appeal will be closely watched as it could have a significant impact on the political landscape of Jharkhand.
If Soren is granted bail, he could potentially return to active politics and challenge the current BJP-led government in the state.
However, if his appeal is dismissed, he will remain in jail and his political career could be in jeopardy.
