ICMR Warns Against Protein Supplements, Issues Dietary Guidelines

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has cautioned against the use of protein supplements for building body mass.

The Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), a part of the ICMR, has released revised Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs), emphasizing the importance of meeting essential nutrients and preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The guidelines strongly advise against the prolonged intake of large amounts of protein powders or high protein concentrates, citing potential dangers like bone mineral loss and kidney damage.

The DGIs recommend limiting salt intake, minimizing sugar and ultra-processed foods, and paying attention to food labels for informed and healthy food choices.

According to the guidelines, sugar should constitute less than 5% of total energy intake, while a balanced diet should provide not more than 45% calories from cereals and millet.

The guidelines emphasize that a significant proportion of the Indian population relies heavily on cereals due to the limited availability and high cost of pulses and meat, leading to poor intake of essential macronutrients and micronutrients.

The ICMR-NIN cautions that low intake of essential nutrients can disrupt metabolism and increase the risk of insulin resistance and associated disorders from a young age.

The guidelines highlight the importance of physical activity and healthy diets in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension (HTN), and type 2 diabetes.

They emphasize that following a healthy lifestyle can prevent a significant proportion of premature deaths.

The ICMR's dietary guidelines provide valuable guidance for Indians to make informed choices about their food intake and maintain good health.
