Haryana Political Crisis: BJP Govt Loses Majority
  • BJP government in Haryana loses majority as three independent MLAs withdraw support.
  • Independent MLAs extend support to Congress, leaving BJP with 40 seats in 90-member assembly.
  • Development comes ahead of Lok Sabha elections in the state on May 25.

The Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana is facing a political crisis after three independent legislators withdrew their support on Tuesday, May 7. The MLAs, Randhir Golan from Pundri, Dharmpal Gonder from Nilokheri, and Sombir Singh Sangwan from Dadri, announced their decision in a letter to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya.

The withdrawal of support from the three independent MLAs has left the BJP with 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly. The party has the support of two other independent legislators and the Haryana Lokhit Party, but this is still short of the majority needed to govern.

The Congress, on the other hand, has 30 MLAs, the BJP's former ally Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) has 10, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has one. Independent legislator Balraj Kundu from Meham has not yet made his position clear.

The political crisis in Haryana comes ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the state on May 25. The BJP is hoping to retain its majority in the state, but the withdrawal of support from the three independent MLAs could make this difficult.

The Congress, meanwhile, is hoping to capitalize on the BJP's difficulties and win back some of the seats it lost in the 2014 and 2019 assembly elections. The JJP is also hoping to make gains, and could play a kingmaker role if no party wins a clear majority.

The political crisis in Haryana is a reminder of the fluid nature of Indian politics. Alliances can change quickly, and even governments with a majority can find themselves in trouble if they lose the support of their allies.

It remains to be seen how the political crisis in Haryana will play out. The BJP is hoping to retain its majority, but the Congress and the JJP are both hoping to make gains. The outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in the state could have a significant impact on the political landscape of Haryana.
