The Election Commission of India has directed the Andhra Pradesh government to transfer Director General of Police (DGP) K V Rajendranath Reddy with immediate effect. The order was issued on Saturday, April 9, 2023, and the state government has been asked to send three names of DGP-rank officers as replacements. A new DGP will be appointed by 11 am on Monday, April 10, 2023.
The reason behind the Election Commission's decision to transfer the DGP was not immediately known. However, it is speculated that the move may be related to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled to be held in 2024. The Election Commission is responsible for conducting free and fair elections in India, and it often takes steps to ensure that the police force is not influenced by any political party.
The transfer of the DGP has come as a surprise to many, as Reddy had only been appointed to the post in July 2022. He is a 1989-batch IPS officer and has held various positions in the Andhra Pradesh Police, including Commissioner of Police of Hyderabad. Reddy is known for his tough stance on crime and has been credited with reducing crime rates in the state.
The Election Commission's order has been met with mixed reactions. Some have welcomed the move, saying that it will help to ensure a free and fair election. Others have expressed concern that the transfer could disrupt the ongoing investigation into several high-profile cases.
