Delhi Water Crisis: Government Moves Supreme Court
The Delhi government has filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking additional water supply from neighbouring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. This move comes amidst a severe water crisis in the national capital, with residents facing acute shortages and struggling to meet their daily water needs.
The Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has accused the neighbouring states of reducing water supply to the capital. He has appealed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power in both Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, to intervene and ensure that Delhi receives its due share of water.
The water crisis has deepened in recent weeks due to the ongoing heatwave and increased water consumption. The Delhi government has introduced stringent measures to conserve water, including fines for water wastage and disconnection of illegal water connections. However, these measures have failed to provide significant relief to the residents.
Residents across Delhi are facing a daily struggle to access clean water. They are forced to wait in long queues for water tankers or carry water containers from distant sources. The situation is particularly dire in low-income neighbourhoods, where residents often have to purchase water at high prices.
The Delhi government acknowledges the severity of the water crisis and is exploring all possible options to address it. However, a long-term solution requires cooperation from neighbouring states and a comprehensive water management strategy that ensures equitable distribution of water resources.
