  • Cyclone Remal makes landfall over Bengal-Bangladesh coasts.
  • Max wind speed recorded at 110-120 kmph during landfall.
  • West Bengal Governor chairs emergency review meeting ahead of landfall.

Cyclone Remal, the first cyclonic storm of the year, made landfall over the coastal areas of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal on May 26, 2023. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted that the landfall process would commence in the evening and continue for the next four hours.

The IMD stated that the cyclone was moving northwards and was expected to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by midnight with a maximum wind speed of 110-120 kilometers per hour. The landfall process began over the coastal areas of Bangladesh first and then moved towards West Bengal.

In preparation for the cyclone's landfall, the West Bengal government held an emergency review meeting chaired by Governor CV Ananda Bose. The meeting discussed the state's preparedness and response measures to mitigate the impact of the cyclone. Governor Bose assured that the state was well-prepared and that all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure the safety of the people.

The IMD issued regular bulletins to keep the public informed about the cyclone's movement and intensity. The department advised people in the affected areas to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines.

Cyclone Remal brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The storm caused damage to infrastructure, uprooted trees, and disrupted power and communication lines. However, there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The government and relief agencies worked to provide assistance to those affected by the cyclone. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army were deployed to assist in relief and rescue operations.

As the cyclone moved inland, it weakened gradually. However, the IMD advised people in the affected areas to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines until the storm had completely passed.
